Five killed in accidents on Portuguese roads between December 27-30

At least five people died on Portuguese roads between Friday, December 27 and Monday, 30, according to provisional data from GNR police’s ‘Christmas and New Year 2024/2025’ operation.

Statistics also show that 617 road accidents were registered, resulting in the five fatalities, as well as 15 serious injuries, and 201 minor injuries.

Meanwhile, enforcement efforts led to over 600 traffic-related arrests. Among the 43,677 drivers checked, 256 were found driving under the influence of alcohol, with 157 arrests for blood alcohol levels equal to or exceeding 1.2 g/l. A further 83 drivers were detained for operating vehicles without a valid license.

The operation uncovered 9,980 road infractions, with some of the main violations including 1,962 cases of speeding, 99 instances of alcohol-related offenses, 237 violations related to improper seatbelt or child restraint usage, 119 cases of illegal mobile phone use while driving, 788 violations for failing mandatory vehicle inspections, and 294 cases of driving without mandatory liability insurance.

“We are committed to working for the safety of the population, especially during a period when family gatherings and traditions take on greater meaning,” GNR police say in a statement. “We count on everyone’s contribution and responsibility to ensure these festivities are celebrated safely, without tragedies to mourn.”
