Turistrela is funding a project to promote skiing and its practice beyond the Serra da Estrela.
Speaking live from the Serra da Estrela, where snow is set to finally fall tonight, Turistrela’s president, Artur Costa Pais, revealed that the region’s Tourism Association is funding a project to promote skiing and its practice beyond the slopes of Portugal’s only “ski resort”.
The operator plans to invest in snow-making machines that function at temperatures above freezing and set up ski runs in various parts of the country. To this end, “all that is needed is openness in municipalities in large urban and tourist centres.”
He highlights that the resort was the big attraction during the festive season for those hoping for real snow. But apparently, this is not enough. Those interested in boosting their investment in the central massif face an obstacle. This new project would enhance the current offerings to strengthen Serra da Estrela’s position as the sole snow destination in the nation.
“Indoor ski slopes like these operate all year round, as they do in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Spain”, and even Dubai, says Artur Costa Pais in an interview with SIC Noticias.
“It is a challenge that we will pose to the municipalities to provide us with conditions in terms of land, access and infrastructure”, concluded Costa Pais.
