Heavy rain and wind causes damages throughout country
A total of 21 homes suffered damages in Peniche yesterday when a tornado sweeping in from the sea made landfall.
According to Civil Protection, it was “the most serious incident recorded” in yesterday’s bad weather, but there were no human casualties or even injuries.
The extreme wind phenomenon hit the Luís de Camões neighbourhood of Peniche, at 3.45pm, causing trees, advertising hoardings and road signs to fall. Some exceptional photographs of the tornado can be seen on social media.
Otherwise, the Lisbon/ Tejo Valley was among worst affected regions, with multiple reports of fallen trees/ damaged structures/ localised flooding.
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) warns effects of the bad weather will still be felt today in some areas. It all derives from Depression Floriane, named by MeteoFrance (France’s meteorological service), which is moving eastwards along the Atlantic.
Floriane is expected to ‘significantly impact’ the northern coast of Spain and the Bay of Biscay region, with strong wind and sea turbulence.
All 18 districts of mainland Portugal and the Madeira archipelago have been under a yellow warning due to the bad weather, with orange warnings in place for islands in the Azores. ND
