Online rumours suggested coin would be sold for €7.50 each
The Bank of Portugal (Banco de Portugal) has firmly denied claims circulating online that it plans to launch a commemorative coin in honour of Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
In an official statement released last week, the central bank declared it has “neither issued nor intends to issue any collection or commemorative coin dedicated to Cristiano Ronaldo.”
The bank further clarified that its annual coin and medal production program is exclusively approved by the Portuguese Mint and Official Printing Office – ICNM, which has also denied the claims.
The clarification comes after wild rumours gained traction online, fuelled by viral posts. According to the claims, the supposed “Ronaldo coin” would see the release of 25,000 coins with a €7 face value, sold for €7.50 each.
Some reports suggested the coin could even skyrocket in value to €144,000 due to its rarity, gold content, and Ronaldo’s global fame.
Many social media posts and articles even featured an image of the alleged coin. However, many have pointed out that the image was generated using artificial intelligence (AI).
