Ballet tells story of Culatra and Armona islands

“Storm” takes the stage of the Municipal Auditorium in Olhão for a unique performance on January 11.

Olhão’s Municipal Auditorium is hosting a unique performance of “Storm” on January 11 at 21h30. Telling the story of the Culatra and Armona, the ballet aims to alert the public to what could happen to the islands.

“The show affirms the cultural identity of the Algarve and warns about climate change”, highlights the organisation.

The show features a script and music by Armando Mota, complemented by choreography from Daniel Cardoso, and is presented by Companhia Quorum Ballet.

This fictional work draws inspiration from renowned classics like Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story, infused with the vibrant essence of the Algarve.

Although it features classical music, it addresses themes such as the traditional “baile mandado”, a unique form of dance from the Algarve.

Just as Strawinsky incorporated traditional Russian narratives and Bela Bartok was influenced by Hungary’s folklore, Armando Mota, inspired by the Algarve, composed his piece dedicated to the islands of Culatra and Armona.

To choreograph and perform his piece, Armando Mota sought the expertise of Daniel Cardoso, a contemporary choreographer with a portfolio of internationally acclaimed performances, and the Quorum Ballet dance company, which recently triumphed with their interpretation of “Rite of Spring” at Teatro das Figuras in Faro.

Tickets cost €5 and can be purchased at the Auditorium’s ticket office, open Tuesday through Friday between 13h30 and 17h00.
