Azores lifts total ban on glyphosate herbicides

The use of glyphosate herbicides in the Azores is now permitted in exceptional situations, four years after it was banned in public spaces, according to a regional legislative decree published in Diário da República today.

The amendment to the 2020 regional legislative decree that banned the use of glyphosate herbicides in public spaces was approved in December in the Azores Legislative Assembly on a proposal by CHEGA, with votes in favour of the party, the centre-right coalition that governs the region (PSD, CDS-PP and PPM) and IL, and votes against by BE, PS and PAN.

The law, which comes into force tomorrow, maintains the ban on the application of glyphosate products in urban areas, leisure spaces and communication routes but authorises it, “exceptionally, in these areas, in “limited geographical areas, to “prevent or correct risk situations, particularly for the environment, agriculture or forestry.

Glyphosate has been famously linked to cases of cancer in human beings, but still the European has decided to renew authorisation for its use within the bloc until December 2033.
