Tupperware factory gets ‘a few days reprieve’

The Tupperware factory in Montalvo, Constância (Santarém), has not closed its doors today, as announced, and will continue operating for a few more days to fulfil orders, say reports – although the future of the business’s 200 workers is still uncertain (see below). According to one of the workforce, the factory currently “is operating normally and in all sectors (warehouse, order fulfilment and offices) in order to fulfil orders through existing stocks”, which are “plenty”. Only the production sector has stopped, following the filing for bankruptcy of the parent company in the United States. UPDATE: Since this story went online, the mayor of Constância has said that a group of Portuguese businessmen has sent a proposal to the US to purchase the plant, and maintain the current workforce. The group is awaiting a response. The future might be a lot rosier than locals have been fearing…
