Lagoa revises urban plans to increase housing

Local Housing Strategy identified the need for over 200 additional houses

The municipal council of Lagoa has approved revisions to local land planning documents in a bid to make more room for the construction of housing.

The revision of the UP1 urbanisation plan, which covers the areas of Ferragudo, Parchal, Mexilhoeira da Carregação and Calvário, was approved in a council meeting on December 10. It includes the redefinition of eight “Operational Planning and Management Units” (UOPGs), enabling new housing developments. Additionally, it introduces new road infrastructure to alleviate traffic issues in these areas and allocates land for expanding the Bela Vista Municipal Stadium – already a “nationally and internationally recognised facility”, which will now have the capacity to host more athletes, training sessions, and competitions, the council says.

Updates to the detailed plan (PP) of Vale da Eira in Estômbar have also been announced, allowing the council to increase the area where housing can be built – namely a 10-hectare vacant land parcel, which the local authority believes can be used to build up to 200 new housing units.

Lagoa’s Local Housing Strategy, approved in 2021, identified the need for over 200 additional housing units. The municipality’s approach includes rehabilitating and renting existing properties, constructing new social housing, and supporting private investments in rental housing. Additional efforts focus on providing financial support for building rehabilitation and expanding permanent housing solutions. By completing these plans, the council believes it will be able to achieve the goals set out in the strategy in the coming years.

Ensuring the constitutional right of access to dignified living conditions for all the people of Lagoa is the goal of our Local Housing Strategy,” says Lagoa mayor Luís Encarnação. “It is a key mission of the municipality, which I will not consider completed as long as there is one citizen without a dignified house to live in.”
