PJ police record 112 ‘intentional homicides’ in Portugal in 2024
The country’s PJ Judicial Police recorded 112 intentional homicides in 2024, the highest number of the decade, according to official data released today by Diário de Notícias.
According to the PJ, in 7.4% of homicide cases there was no relationship between the victim and the perpetrator (in 2022 it had been 13% and in 2022, 17%).
This data will be included in the 2024 Annual Internal Security Report (RASI).
Bearing in mind that 58% of investigations have not yet been concluded, the country’s principal criminal investigative force indicates that 13.1% of homicides in 2024 occurred within a marital context, 7.4% between relatives and 16% between neighbours.
Of the 112 deaths recorded last year, 25% were caused by firearms (in 2023 it was 20.9% and in 2022 it was 21.8%), while 33.3% of deaths resulted from the use of bladed weapons/ knives (in 2023 and 2022 this number was higher, 35.5% and 34.7% respectively).
According to DN, “global trends are not yet known, but by cross-referencing information from sources in the three main police forces that are validating this data, it is possible to say that general crime has stagnated and violent crime could increase by 1% to 2%.”
