Portuguese ‘jihadi’ in process of repatriation from Iraq

Nero Saraiva, one of the last surviving Portuguese ‘jihadis’ that fought with ISIS/ Daesh, is in the process of being repatriated to Portugal in order to serve out the remainder of his 15-year sentence, Correio da Manhã reports today, adding that Saraiva has nine years left to run for a condemnation for being a member of a terrorist organisation. What CM’s brief report does not address is that Saraiva has been described in the past as “not just a simple jihadi”: he is understood to have been the ‘right hand man’ of former ISIS executioner “Jihadi John”. He was arrested and has been held in detention in Iraq since 2019.
