Yesterday’s ‘exclusive’ broken by SIC, that the government will not be extending the mandate of Mário Centeno, as Governor of the Bank of Portugal, Socialist party leader Pedro Nuno Santos has railed that “the majority of Portuguese think Centeno should continue as governor”. How he came to this conclusion/ what data he is using is unclear, but as far as Santos is concerned, the announcement yesterday, following a television interview in which Centeno intimated he was looking forward to a second mandate (and was not thus thinking of running for President of the Republic), was “ugly and inelegant”.
