Experts want to change forest clearance to stop fires

Experts from the Coimbra School of Agriculture warn that the current model for clearing forests and fire protection strips is wrong. They believe that total deforestation is not the solution to fighting fires. The idea is to change the paradigm and type of interventions:  instead of clearing away all organic material, there is a selection of plants that should remain and be allowed to grow until they form an area with less sunlight. Over time, the idea is that fires can be controlled more easily this way, and cause less damage.
