Portugal’s Food and Economic Safety Authority (ASAE) has seized more than a tonne of meat ‘in an advanced state of deterioration’ that was destined to be sold to the public via social networks. Through the Northern Regional Unit – Barcelos Operational Unit, ASAE carried out an inspection operation, in collaboration with GNR police, at a food processing ‘establishment’ in the municipality of Ponte de Lima. “As part of the investigation, the authority seized 1.2 tonnes of ‘meat products stored in an advanced state of deterioration and unfit for human consumption’. The commercial activity of the establishment in question has been suspended due to the ‘absence of adequate structural conditions, lack of cleanliness, hygiene and licensing’. Its owners also face a hefty fine.
