Luís Marques Mendes, former PSD leader and long-time television political commentator, is standing down from his Sunday evening slot on SIC Notícias this weekend, in order to be ‘free’ to run for the presidency of the republic. According to Lusa, he will be formally presenting his candidature for this upcoming ‘election race’ on Thursday February 6 in Braga. The news comes as an opinion poll puts former Navy chief Admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo firmly in ‘first place’ among voting intentions, even though he has not yet confirmed he will be running.
