In stepping down from his regular television slot to run for the presidency of the republic, former PSD leader Luís Marques Mendes, has stressed his focus will be on “ambition, stability and ethics”. Mr Mendes has always been seen as a voice of intelligence and reason – however, the topic pointed at for the focus of this presidential race (by a potential candidate who has not yet declared himself: former Naval chief of staff Henrique Gouveia e Melo) is ‘defence’ – how to ensure that Portugal is protected in the complicated geopolitical reality that is fast developing. And this far, no other candidates have mentioned this.
