“Taxa zero” road safety campaign begins tomorrow

Police are launching a new road safety campaign tomorrow, lasting until Monday February 10, and will be out in force on the nation’s road, breathalysing drivers. The focus will be on “taxa zero” – zero sign of alcohol in the blood. As if the campaign needed any explanation, a statement by the police/ ANSR (authority for road safety) states: “In  Portugal in 2023, one in four drivers killed in road accidents had a blood alcohol level of 0.5 g/l or more and three in four of these drivers had a level of 1.2 g/l or more. Of all the road accident victims autopsied, 23% had a blood alcohol level higher than the legally permitted limit, of which 73% exceeded the level considered criminal (=1.20 g/l).
