Family health unit will complement São Brás de Alportel’s existing health centre
São Brás de Alportel has officially kicked off the construction of its new family health unit (USF) with a symbolic first stone-laying ceremony.
The health unit marks a significant investment of over €2 million, funded through the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).
Under construction in the northern part of the town on Rua das Comunidades Portuguesas, the new medical facility will cover 756 square metres, housing six doctor’s surgeries, as well as nursing and treatment rooms, maternal and child health areas, and “administrative and logistical” spaces. The building was designed to provide better working conditions for healthcare professionals, in an effort to retain their talent in São Brás, while ensuring maximum comfort for patients by offering modern facilities and more parking, the municipal council says in a statement to the press.
At the ceremony, São Brás mayor Vítor Guerreiro spoke of the importance of the new USF in meeting the community’s growing healthcare needs.
“This project follows our municipal strategy to expand healthcare and social inclusion services, strengthening the services provided at the health centre, which will see rooms freed up for other purposes,” Guerreiro stated.
In addition to the new facility, the second phase of renovations at the existing health centre will begin soon, focusing on energy efficiency improvements and improving the surrounding gardens.
The event was attended by several key figures, including the President of the Local Health Unit (ULS) of the Algarve, Tiago Botelho, who praised the high standards of healthcare in São Brás de Alportel.
São Brás municipal assembly president and healthcare professional Ulisses Brito echoed this sentiment, highlighting the project as a forward-thinking move that will benefit the community for years to come.
Among the distinguished attendees were representatives from the local council, the Algarve Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR Algarve), project developers from Urbitraço Lda., and contractors from Martins Gago & Filhos Lda., alongside many others.
The local council adds that this project will complement the existing medical facilities in the borough, which also include the Algarve’s Centre of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
