Video surveillance will multiply in the Algarve, says PSD

Vice-president of the PSD Parliamentary Group, Cristóvão Norte, wants more proximity policing.

Cristóvão Norte, the vice president of the PSD Parliamentary Group, raised the issue of security in the Algarve region during a hearing with Margarida Blasco, the Minister of Internal Affairs.

In his interpellation, Cristóvão Norte stressed that thanks to “the work of the municipalities and this government, there is already video surveillance in Faro and Albufeira, and we will generalise this instrument to prevent, combat, and punish criminal acts.”

The PSD deputy noted that this instrument, respecting citizens’ rights, “is essential for projecting State authority and safeguarding citizens, as well as reinforcing proximity policing and addressing the issues of migrant and drug trafficking, which are widely recognised,” amid recorded landings on the Algarve coast.

Cristóvão Norte advocated for the use of artificial intelligence to improve the patrolling of the waters within Portugal’s jurisdiction to deter the expansion of organised crime routes in the southern region of the country.

“The PSD Algarve acknowledges the necessity of modernising and improving the resources of the security forces, as well as ensuring citizens’ safety while respecting everyone’s rights”, stated the party.
