48 deaths on Portugal’s roads in first 46 days of 2025
In the first 46 days of this year, 48 people died on Portuguese roads. It is not an unusual result – but it hides a change that no-one can yet understand, writes tabloid Correio da Manhã: half the deaths so far this year have involved two-wheeled vehicles, namely motorcyclists and/ or their passengers, and people riding electric scooters.
The picture is confused by the fact that data is restricted to people who die ‘on the roads’. It does not include accident victims who later die in hospital. But, from PSP and GNR data, 24 of the 48 deaths on the roads were people riding (or transported by) motorcycles and electric scooters.
