Portugal’s road deaths ‘sixth worst in EU’

In 2023, Portugal was the sixth worst country among the EU’s 27 member states in the number of road deaths per million inhabitants, surpassed only by Greece, Croatia, Latvia, Romania and Bulgaria.

According to the 2023 Annual 30-Day Accident Report, released today by the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), the number of fatalities per million inhabitants in Portugal was 60.8, above the EU average of 45.6, in a table led by Sweden (21.8). In 2013, the national rate had been 63.8, which translates into a decrease of 4.8% but the number of accidents with victims per million inhabitants in Portugal increased from 2,888 to 3,480 between 2013 and 2023 (+20.5%), so there is little to be happy about.642 people died on Portuguese roads two years ago, 163 of them within 30 days of the accident, with ANSR admitting that fatalities on the mainland are returning to pre-Covid-19 levels. The EU has set itself the target of reducing road deaths by 50% by 2030.
