Algarve football round-up: Last-minute drama!

LIGA PORTUGAL BETCLIC: FARENSE 0-1 AVS SAD
LIGA PORTUGAL 2 MEU SUPER: PORTIMONENSE 2-1 LEIXÕES

Farense suffered a major blow to their chances of remaining in the top tier next season when found wanting during last Sunday evening’s must-win home clash with fellow strugglers AVS SAD.

The club from the Algarve’s capital had nothing to show for a mostly dominant display as Mexican keeper Ochoa excelled in the AVS goal. His opposite number and so often Farense’s hero, Ricardo Velho, did equally well until blotting his copy book deep into injury time when VAR called referee David Silva’s attention to an infringement during an attempted clearance – forward player Zé Luís buried the resulting penalty with aplomb plunging the almost 6,000 home fans into despair.

Farense, now only one point ahead of bottom club Boavista and six behind Estrela Amadora currently occupying the relegation play-off position, next travel to in-form Estoril on Saturday evening.

Earlier on Sunday, second division Portimonense welcomed Leixões and struggled to find a way into the game during an opening half which saw Régis give the visitors a deserved lead on the half-hour mark.

Several substitutions following the break resulted in a better showing from manager Ricardo Pessoa’s men, with only goalkeeper Dani Figueira holding on to the visitors’ advantage before Douglas Grolli finally managed to convert an 87th-minute Hector free kick at the far post for the equaliser.

As the clock was ticking down, Elijah rose to meet an injury time Geovane cross for an all-important winner.

Portimonense, now well clear of the relegation quagmire, now face fourth-placed Benfica B in Lisbon this Sunday evening.
