PJ “don’t know who skull belongs to found close to river”

Skull, a(nother) human bone plus clothing discovered close to EN109 in Aveiro

In yet another story about random body parts discovered in unusual places, Correio da Manhã today has run with the headline that PJ police “do not know who the skull belongs to found close to the river” near Verdemilho, in the borough of Aveiro, recently. But the mere mention of ‘Aveiro’ has pushed lots of buttons: police are still looking for the body of young mother-of-two Mónica Silva who disappeared without trace 18-months ago from Murtosa, also in the borough of Aveiro, and only 20 kms away from this particular location in Verdemilho.

Mónica Silva’s alleged former lover is due soon to go on trial charged with her murder, and the ‘forced abortion’ of the child she was carrying. But there is no body. Or rather, there has not been a body. The discovery of this skull may be a breakthrough.

According to CM, a human bone, ‘possibly a leg bone’, was found in the same area a few months ago.

“It has never been determined who it belonged to, nor whether it belonged to a man or a woman. It could belong to the same body (as the skull), or not…

“The time of deterioration of the human remains points to two years”, says the paper. But everything depends on whether (or not) the bones had been buried before they were found. “If they had been buried, for example, deterioration is slower. But if they were exposed to the elements or even water, it will have been quicker”.

For now, GNR police – who will have been ‘called to the scene’ following the discovery of the skull – have referred the matter to the PJ, which led searches across the area all through yesterday.

The skull was found, says CM, by a man clearing land near a riverbank, close to the EN109.

Some items of clothing were also found, but these may (or may not) be connected to the most alarming discovery.

This is definitely not the first ‘lead’ on possible body parts of Mónica Silva, but it is nonetheless an unsettling mystery: skulls and human bones do not tend to appear for good reasons.
