Man shot dead during Carnival ‘baile’ in Odiáxere

Man and killer were known to each other

A man in his 50s was shot dead at close range outside a carnival ‘baile’ (traditional party with dancing) in Odiáxere, Lagos, in the early hours of this morning.

As far as locals appear to have understood, both men were known to each other, and involved in an argument at a bar area within the festivities at the Clube Desportivo de Odiáxere.

The younger man then left the complex, returning with a gun to shoot at his victim, who (apparently) goaded him into firing the fatal shot. The first shot, according to local reports, was fired at the ground, at which point the man who eventually died is understood to have said something along the lines of “if you were a man, you would aim at me”.

The alleged shooter has handed himself into police and remains in preventive custody.

Media reports describe the argument between the two men as ‘related to drug trafficking’. They are said to have had a number of ‘past grievances’ between them.

As it was the baile disbanded as soon as revellers inside learnt of the incident, contrary to some social media reports that suggest it went on “in true wild west style”.
