Algarve football round-up: Point made

LIGA PORTUGAL BETCLIC: ESTORIL 2-2 FARENSE
LIGA PORTUGAL 2 MEU SUPER: BENFICA B 0-0 PORTIMONENSE

Last Saturday evening, Farense looked down and out trailing Estoril 2-0 in Lisbon before a tremendous fight-back secured a draw which still leaves the Algarveans six points adrift of safety with nine matches to play.

The game exploded into action following an uneventful opening half, Zanocelo and Marques putting the hosts two up in quick succession. Undeterred, the ‘Lions of Faro’ continued to attack, Miguel Menino’s chalked off effort sandwiched between Rony Lopes’ 68th-minute glaring miss and Yusupha rattling the post in the 80th providing the preamble for Rui Costa and Menino (again) finally finding the target to rescue a point at the death.

Farense next welcome last weekend’s Porto-conquerors Braga on Saturday afternoon.

Last Sunday evening, Portimonense were also in Lisbon for a combative but goalless encounter with Benfica B. Outstanding keeper Vinicius defended everything the hosts threw at him and when referee Fá Sanhá threatened to rob coach Ricardo Pessoa’s men of a hard-earned point by pointing to the penalty spot for a completely unintentional 90th-minute Alemão handball, VAR overturned the decision.

Portimonense are back in action at home against fellow mid-table club Feirense this Friday evening at 6.45pm.
