Art of Portuguese calçada bids for UNESCO intangible cultural heritage status

The Portuguese ‘Calçada’ (cobblestone) association is bidding for UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status for the “art and knowledge of how to lay Portuguese calçadas”.

The application went in on Monday (March 17) and is backed by craftsmen from eight municipalities – Braga, Estremoz, Faro, Funchal, Lisbon, Ponta Delgada, Porto do Mós and Setúbal. Their focus is on getting recognition and support for this ancient craft, which is in danger of extinction.
