National grid registers “historic maximums” of wind energy on Wednesday
Thanks to storm Martinho blowing its path across the country this week, the national power grid has reported ‘new historic maximums’ in wind energy, with daily production reaching a value of 112.4 gigawatts/ hour, beating the previous record, set in November last year of 110.3 GW/h.
A statement released by REN.pt, says that on Wednesday “the Martinho depression also allowed for a new maximum wind power of 5080 MW at 12.15pm, surpassing the 5034 MW obtained at 1.45pm on 29 February 2024.

The energy produced by wind supplied 56% of the country’s electricity consumption, while total renewable production was responsible for supplying 92% of the country’s electricity needs.
“Since the beginning of the year, renewable production has accounted for 79% of national consumption, broken down into 39% from hydro, 28% from wind, 7% from solar and 5% from biomass”, says the statement, adding that this confirms that “Portugal has maintained a sustainable trajectory in the progressive incorporation of endogenous renewable sources, while maintaining the primary objectives of security of supply and quality of service in the National Electricity System, even in the most adverse situations such as yesterday”.
