4.4 quake caused no personal or material damage
Another day, another earthquake – but this one was felt with some intensity in Faro and Albufeira, measuring 4.4 on the Richter Scale.
It ‘hit’ 75 kms out to sea, south of Faro, at 05.18 this morning, almost certainly waking some people up, but not causing any known personal or material damage.
The truth is that these quakes, as can be seen by the image above, happen all the time.
4.4 is still an essentially insignificant quake. It is only when these tremors get into the numbers from 6 upwards that they take on more notable proportions. And the fact that the southern region gets them all the time is actually ‘a good thing’, as it means there is less likelihood of a ‘big quake’ taking people by nasty surprise.
The depth of these quakes is also very relevant: the closer to the surface, the greater the potential damage. This one was 30kms down, and was just one (albeit the largest) of four that took place over the last 24-hours. ND
