PM expected to be discharged very soon (see update below)
Portugalâs caretaker prime minister LuĂs Montenegro – embarking on a new election campaign – was hospitalised this afternoon after suffering an issue that saw him referred to cardiology.
Very little is being said about what the actual problem was, but the PMâs prognosis is favourable, and he is due to be discharged shortly.
The limited information has been provided by the president of the Board of Directors of ULS de Santa Maria, Carlos Martins.
âAt approximately 1:00 pm, the Prime Minister was admitted to the (Santa Maria) hospital and, due to his symptoms, he was referred to the cardiology department where he is still hospitalised. However, the prognosis is favorable and he is expected to be discharged in the next few hours,â said Martins.
The Prime Ministerâs public engagements this afternoon were performed by economy minister Pedro Reis. In the morning, he chaired the meeting on the Parque Cidades do Tejo project, where he made statements to journalists when he left, around 12:30.
In other words, whatever happened to cause him to seek medical treatment, happened very shortly after he left his morning meeting.
UPDATE: Now discharged and taking a weekend to ‘relax’, the prime minister’s health scare has been described as ‘arrhythmia’ and related to the packed nature of his current agenda. Smiling, and looking perfectly comfortable, Mr Montenegro told reporters as he left Santa Maria Hospital that he will be resuming his political schedule on Monday morning. ND
