Algarve football round-up: Last-minute heartache

LIGA PORTUGAL BETCLIC: BENFICA v FARENSE (Wednesday, April 2nd)
LIGA PORTUGAL 2 MEU SUPER: VIZELA 3-2 PORTIMONENSE

Following the prolonged international break, Portimonense returned to action for the first of only eight remaining league matches away at second-placed Vizela last Saturday afternoon.

The Algarveans got off to a perfect start when Tamble successfully converted a sixth-minute penalty after having been brought down by Diogo Nascimento. Unfortunately, manager Ricardo Pessoa’s team was then guilty of some schoolboy defending which allowed Vivaldo Semedo to equalise with ease.

The visitors again began the second half the stronger, Camilo Duran hitting the post almost immediately following the restart before beating keeper Ruly with a 55th-minute diagonal shot across the area.

However, a double substitution by the hosts managed to turn the match around, Schutte drawing Vizela level only 10 minutes after coming on and an unmarked Busnic striking the winner from the edge of the area with virtually the last kick of the entertaining encounter.

Portimonense, who welcome second-from-bottom Oliveirense on Sunday afternoon, are still nine points clear of the relegation places and five above the third last play-off position currently occupied by FC Porto B.

Farense plays tomorrow (Wednesday), when their increasingly unlikely-looking quest of top division survival continues at Benfica. They are then in action at home again against seventh-placed Casa Pia on Monday evening.
