19-year-old without licence to “await trial” in freedom
The motorcyclist who fled the scene after mowing down a nine-year-old boy on Sunday evening in Amadora has been identified. He is a 19-year-old who was driving without a licence.
The young man has been cited as an ‘arguido’ (official suspect), and accused of the crimes of offences against physical integrity and driving without a valid licence.
A statement by Cometlis (Lisbon’s Metropolitan PSP command) has confirmed that the suspect was not arrested, and will await trial at liberty. The only measures to which he has been bound are TIR (the requirement to remain living at his home address) and periodic reporting in to his local police station.
The statement stressed the “gravity, censurability and social alarm” provoked by the incident – and the fact that police have all the evidence (in the form of witness statements, motorbike and “other elements”) that they consider necessary for a conviction.
There has been no update on the condition of the victim, who was transported in a serious condition to Lisbon’s Santa Maria Hospital after being stabilised ‘at the scene’ in Avenida Marechal Costa Gomes.
Equally, there has been no update in the search for the red Seat Ibiza that ran into three cyclists on the Marginal between Oeiras and Carcavelos on Sunday morning, leaving all of them lying on the tarmac, with injuries. ND
