Further yellow warnings as Storm Nuria descends on Portugal

Nuria to bring heavy rain, thunderstorms on Friday

Following the wettest March many (younger) people can remember, April is not promising much of a let up: all of mainland Portugal will be under a yellow warning on Friday due to the forecast of heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, under the name ‘Storm Nuria’ – and up to that point, rain is still bearing down, sometimes (like early this morning) torrentially.

According to IPMA meteorological institute we cannot expect much in the way of dry weather until Saturday.

The current depression “is associated with a cold frontal surface and several lines of instability”, IPMA explains.

Just as legions of walkers have started appearing on highways and byways, they will be scuttling again for cover, as strong winds are also expected until Saturday.

As a precaution, IPMA has issued yellow weather warnings for the entire mainland (not ‘serious’ but still indication that spring hasn’t sprung), and warnings about rough seas/ high waves from Thursday to Friday.

The big question, ‘will that be it, after Saturday?’ unfortunately does not get the desired response: the bad weather seems set to keep hauling us back to our gumboots and umbrellas for quite a few more days yet.

According to weather.com, rain returns on Sunday, then the following Thursday… and stays in place until April 16 (the end of the 10-day forecast). After that, who knows? ND
