Algarve football round-up: Not good enough

LIGA PORTUGAL BETCLIC: BENFICA 3-2 FARENSE / FARENSE 0-0 CASA PIA
LIGA PORTUGAL 2 MEU SUPER: PORTIMONENSE 2-3 OLIVEIRENSE

Following a good showing away at new league leaders Benfica last week, Farense were hoping to finally break their prolonged winless run at home against Casa Pia on Monday night. In the event, manager Tozé Marreco’s team dominated their much higher-placed opponents from start to finish, having two ‘goals’ chalked off for off-side in the process, without actually making their superiority count.

As a result, the solitary point gained still leaves them joint bottom alongside Boavista, five points adrift of the relegation play-off position currently occupied by AVS SAD, and eight from safety. There are only six matches of the season remaining starting with a trip to Estrela Amadora on Sunday afternoon.

One division below, Portimonense supposedly faced a much easier task at home against bottom club Oliveirense last Sunday. Things appeared to be going according to plan when 18-year-old first team debutant Danio Djassi headed home at the far post after only a quarter of an hour and Camilo Duran doubled the advantage immediately following the second half restart.

The visitors had other ideas, however, and as the Algarveans had seemingly ‘gone to sleep’, Diogo Casimiro, Bruno Silva and Mário Junior found the back of the net in quick succession to turn the match on its head.

Portimonense, who next travel to fifth-placed Chaves on Saturday, are now only two points to the good over relegation play-off place holders FC Porto B but are still six clear of the bottom two.
