Surveillance cameras approved for Algarve’s Vilamoura

49 cameras will be installed around the marina and surrounding access points

The Portuguese government has greenlit the installation of a CCTV video surveillance system in the Algarve resort of Vilamoura.

The decision, signed off by the office of the Secretary of State for Internal Administration on March 21, allows for 49 cameras to be installed around the award-winning marina and surrounding access points.

According to the municipal council of Loulé, the system aims to act as a complementary tool for security forces, increasing the feeling of security among residents and workers as well as the holidaymakers who choose Vilamoura.

The cameras will run 24/7, capturing footage every day of the year. However, there’ll be no audio recording, just video, the council says, adding the system is designed to protect public spaces without crossing the line into personal privacy.

GNR police will monitor the system, while the local council has been tasked with installing it. A public tender worth around €900,000 is expected to be launched soon.

Meanwhile, plans are already in motion to expand the surveillance system to public spaces in Quarteira and Almancil. GNR police and the municipal council are already studying the best locations to install the cameras, alongside local parish councils.
