TAP Airbus in emergency landing due to “inhalation of inadequate odours”

Two people assisted due to “inhalation”

In yet another strange case of ‘bad smells’ affecting TAP aircraft, a TAP Airbus A320 has had to make an emergency landing in Porto (Francisco Sá Carneiro airport) due to what the airline termed “inadequate odours that could affect the journey”.

Two people had to be “assisted” (for the effects of these inadequate odours) – but very little else has been explained.

It is not even clear where the aircraft was heading.

What TAP’s statement did concede was that inadequate odours “could affect the aircraft, especially the cockpits”. Thus, it seems possible that the two people assisted will have been the pilots.

The alert came shortly before 9pm last night, and various rescue services attended (a total of 10 vehicles from various fire stations and 31 personnel).

It is unclear whether the inadequate odours have anything to do with episodes pre-pandemic of ‘inadequate odours’ on new Airbus 330neos, as well as on 320s, which also affected the flight crew, and saw complaints even from passengers.

An aviation news article has described the odours (dubbed ‘fumes’ in the sector) as reminiscent of “sweaty socks, manure and farmyard smells”. In some cases, these smells have led to pilots becoming incapacitated and requiring medical attention . ND
