Five teenage pupils injured after bus bursts into flames on A5 motorway

Three of the injured treated in hospital, for smoke inhalation/ anxiety

Five teenage pupils were injured this afternoon after a bus caught fire on the busy A5 motorway between Lisbon and Cascais.

The bus, owned by the Barraqueiro company, was carrying a school trip of 40 teenagers from the Professor Noronha Feio school, in Queijas, Oeiras, accompanied by two teachers.

The cause of the blaze at this point is unclear.

Three of the injured youngsters, aged between 14 and 16, were transported to hospital: one for smoke inhalation, the two others for anxiety. The other two were able to be treated at the scene.

The fire was swiftly tackled and is now fully extinct, but the incident, coming just before 1pm, caused long tailbacks on a highway already known for regular traffic jams.
