The Choir Week has become one of Lagoa’s most popular musical events
The Lagoa Choir Week (Semana Coral de Lagoa) will return this year for its milestone 25th edition, showcasing the Algarve’s rich choral tradition and international talent. From May 11 to 18, a series of free and concerts will take place throughout the municipality, culminating in a grand finale at the Carlos do Carmo auditorium.
The festival will feature performances from renowned local and international choirs, including Coral Polifonica Ecijana from Écija, Spain, Grupo Coral de Portimão, Grupo Coral Feminino Outras Vozes from Faro, Coro Jubilate Deo from Tavira, Grupo Coral de Lagos, and Coral Ideias do Levante from Lagoa.
The festival will kick off with a special opening concert at the Parchal church on Sunday, May 11 at 5pm, featuring a performance by Coral Polifonica Ecijana and Coral Ideias do Levante.
This will be followed by a rehearsal and concert featuring Grupo Coral de Portimão and Coral Ideias do Levante on Wednesday, May 14 at the São José Convent in Lagoa. The event, kicking off at 8pm, will provide an intimate look into the musical process behind these choir groups.
A special open rehearsal is planned for Friday, May 16 at 8pm, when Coral Ideias do Levante will invite the community to take part in an open rehearsal offering another behind-the-scenes look at the rehearsal process.
Bringing the event to a close will be a grand closing concert at the local auditorium, scheduled for Sunday, May 18 at 5pm. The concert will feature performances from Grupo Coral Feminino Outras Vozes, Coro Jubilate Deo, Grupo Coral de Lagos, and Coral Ideias do Levante, with tickets costing €6 per person and due to go on sale soon online at www.auditoriocarlosdocarmo.bol.pt
All other concerts and events are free, though advance reservations via the event’s website (www.semanacoral.net) are mandatory.
The Lagoa Choir Week is, according to José Carlos Bago d’Uva (the mentor of the original project), an event open to sharing musical experiences and unforgettable moments of community. According to Bago d’Uva, this event has already become a key milestone in the country’s choral circuit.
The event is organised by Ideias do Levante, a cultural association founded on April 27, 1995, and based in Lagoa (Algarve, Portugal), with an extension in Portimão (Espaço Portas do Sol). The association focuses on training, production, and cultural promotion through regular and special projects. These projects span various fields, including performing arts, visual arts, literature, as well as health and well-being.
