Police swoop on cannabis shops in Albufeira after 10 people end up in hospital

Customers suffer “loss of consciousness, euphoria, total lethargy and coma”

After a 17-year-old girl fell into a coma following consumption of products purchased at a cannabis shop in Albufeira, GNR police have swooped on two shops in the borough, ‘identifiying’ five people, and seizing more than 2,300 products.

According to GNR captain Carlos Fausto, 10 ‘medical emergencies’ have recently been registered in Albufeira “related to the consumption of products acquired in these establishments”.

During the police searches, a number of products on sale were found to contain “prohibited substances”, explain reports. These substances, namely THC ( (tetrahydrocannabinol) – the substance responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis, the sale of which is still considered to be a crime in Portugal), were found in “plant preparations” being sold for “recreational purposes” and/ or consumption as or with food, as well as medicinal and cosmetic products “without the necessary authorisation by the competent authority”.

The GNR has said these ‘swoops’ on cannabis outlets in Albufeira will continue.

The apparent customers who ended up in hospital after purchasing psychotropic products from the two shops suffered symptoms described as “loss of consciousness, euphoria, total lethargy and coma”.

As to the five people ‘identified’, they are three men and two women, ranging in ages from 30 to 63. ND
