The 100th anniversary of the Sintra tram was celebrated recently with a wine auction held in the Valenças Palace. There has always been a link between the tram and the region’s wine production. The tram route connects the Vila Velha to Praia das Maçãs, passing through the Colares Regional Wine Cellar, and is used to transport baskets of grapes to the region’s cellars. The celebrations of the tram’s 100 years started on June 4, with the re-opening of the original line between Sintra town and Praia das Maçãs, considered to be one of Europe’s most romantic journeys.
