The Anglo-Portuguese Society, based at Canning House in London’s elegant Belgrave Square, provides a meeting place for English-speaking people with connections to Portugal, and for Portuguese people living and/or working in England.
Members are treated to lectures on a wide variety of subjects every month, including historical or current topics of mutual interest, concerts, wine tastings and art exhibitions. Visits are arranged to places of historical interest in both the UK and Portugal, and there is always plenty of time to catch up with old friends and make new ones over a glass of wine, or at the annual black tie dinner dance. As we approach the bi-centenary anniversaries of the Peninsular War Battles, the society is making plans to join the British Historical Society of Portugal in exploring and re-enacting those historical events.
In a recent interview with The Resident, the new chairman of the Anglo-Portuguese Society, Gavin Trechman, said the organisation was keen to expand its membership. He pointed out that, among the 10,000 new expat homeowners who came to Portugal in 2003, there must be many who would find the Anglo-Portuguese Society a useful forum for making contacts and learning more about their adopted country. Members are encouraged to take part in events that are held in either England or Portugal.
The annual dinner dance will be held this year at the beautifully restored Landmark Hotel in London, on Wednesday November 17. Tickets are 85 pounds sterling per person, all inclusive. The society would be delighted to welcome any interested or prospective members to join us for the evening.
