AIA on track to attain ISO 20121 certification

As part of its efforts towards environmental responsibility, the Algarve’s International Racetrack will implement 12 ecological measures during the Portuguese GP in March.

Globally known for its dedication to environmental sustainability, the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve remains steadfast in promoting sustainable practices and expanding efforts to achieve an even higher level of sustainability during the MotoGP world championship between March 22 and 24. This will be another step towards becoming certified according to the ISO 20121 standard.

“In recent years, the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve has implemented well-known and recognised sustainability practices. We are completely independent in terms of electrical energy, which is obtained entirely from renewable sources. In addition, thanks to our partnership with Repsol, we already use fuel with a high percentage of synthetic compounds.

We have also implemented a programme for using wastewater and rainwater to collect oils. By collaborating with a certified company with proven results in the market, we will have concrete evidence of the outcomes of all our efforts. We not only strive to be the best and most sustainable GP in the championship but also aim to continue and further enhance our practices in this area”, says Paulo Pinheiro, the CEO of Parkalgar.

To achieve these parameters of excellence, the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve will put into practice during the Portuguese GP in March a series of 12 environmental measures – which will be audited – both inside and outside the circuit, of which the following stand out:

  • Using extra solar panels to power the Media Centre.
  • Mandatory use of electric scooters in the paddock
  • Using synthetic fuel in support vehicles
  • Donation of leftover food
  • Reducing water usage in the paddock
  • Recycling used tyres

A partnership was established with SIA – Sociedade Inovação Ambiental to implement all the necessary measures for obtaining ISO 20121 certification. SIA is one of the few organisations certified to achieve this in Portugal. It was responsible for certifying Rock in Rio in Lisbon and in Rio de Janeiro, as well as collaborating in the certification process of the DS Techeetah Formula E team.
