Alcoutim has been making international news for its “cash-for-babies” scheme, which sees the council paying parents €5,000 for every newborn.
The story was picked up by AFP news agency and has since been published throughout the world in media including The Guardian, ITV and Euronews.
“Rather than turn into a ghost town, one Portuguese village facing an exodus of young adults and dwindling birthrates came up with an answer: pay parents €5,000 for every new baby!”, AFP wrote.
