Up to 30% ‘losses’ from weeks of rain, but drought would have been even worse
With so many delighting in the news that the Algarve now has enough water stored in its dams to keep supplies going for the next three years, the reality is that the quantity of rainfall in recent weeks has taken its toll on agriculture, particularly when it comes to the region’s signature citrus orchards.
According to reports, 20% – 30% of production has been compromised. It hasn’t just been because of the rain, the wind also caused major issues.
But the reality is that without the rain, things could have been worse. The drought, and restrictions on watering, were slowly killing the Algarve’s citrus trees.
Thus, hopes are that when everything starts drying out, trees will recover from the damage and yield better fruit next year… ND
