AMAL, the association of Algarve municipalities, has agreed to maintaining water-saving measures through September, hoping for a meeting with Portuguese environment agency APA by the third week of the month to better gauge the overall situation. For the time being, this means municipal swimming pools will remain shut, water features and fountains will be kept turned off and the irrigation of public green spaces stays reduced to an absolute minimum. AMAL president António Pina has warned that if the drought persists, 2023 will see taps running dry (not just boreholes).
