Algarve due to see restrictions on water consumption lifted

Recent rains have made all the difference

Maria da Graça Carvalho, Portugal’s minister for the environment and energy announced today that the Committee to Monitor the Effects of the Drought will meet next week in Faro, and that conditions are in place to ease restrictions on water consumption.

Thanks to days and days of good rain, the situation in the Algarve has been evolving favourably, with an additional 99.3 cubic hectometres (hm3) of water compared to the same period in 2024, she said, adding that there are conditions for a possible further easing of the restrictions in force across the board (agriculture, the urban sector and tourism).

Also in the water sector, the minister said funding will be reinforced to reduce water losses, with emphasis on the Algarve region (see the recent news about works, finally, to fix the leaks from Barragem da Bravura).

Meantime, the rain doesn’t stop. We are due to have more of it all through the week and into next. The miracle of Nature is coming through for a region that was ‘at its wits end’ following years of insufficient rainfall in the face of galloping thirsty monoculture projects being given the green-light,  and increasing demands placed by tourism.
