The Algarve region has been named Europe’s Golf Destination of the Year 2014 – the most prestigious title in the golf industry – by the more than 500 members of the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO).
The award was presented on November 14 in Tarragona, Catalonia (Spain) in a ceremony during the International Golf Travel Market (IGTM), the world’s largest fair in the world dedicated to golf travel, reaching out to 50 million players each year.
Other destinations running for the same title were Lisboa Coast Golf, Dublin & Central Ireland, the Gran Canaria, Highlands Scotland and Riviera & Provence.
Another accolade placing Portugal firmly on the golfing map of the world included the title of Europe’s Leading Golf Destination in the World Travel Awards – known as the ‘tourism Oscars’. The Algarve’s 40 golf courses, representing half of the country’s golfing facilities, played a major part in Portugal’s achievement.
