Algarve football round-up: Cup fever

Portuguese FA Cup 3rd round:

  • Sporting Covilhã v Portimonense (Friday, 7pm)
  • Lank Vilaverdense v Farense (Sunday, 3pm)

Portimonense kick off the third round of the Portuguese FA Cup at third division Série B leaders Covilhã – who were relegated at the end of last season – on Friday evening while Farense travel to recently promoted, but bottom second division side, Vilaverdense on Sunday afternoon.

Both Algarve clubs enjoyed satisfactory training matches, with Portimonense beating their U-23s 2-1 and Farense thrashing fourth division Moncarapachense 5-0.

Meanwhile, the Portimão Municipal Stadium is acting as host for Saudi Arabia during the current international break, which saw Portugal confirm qualification to next year’s European Championships in Germany.

The now Roberto Mancini-managed Saudis drew 2-2 with Nigeria during last Friday’s friendly and faced Mali (after the Resident went to press) on Tuesday afternoon.
