Algarve football round-up: Double trouble

LIGA PORTUGAL BETCLIC: FARENSE 0-1 GIL VICENTE

LIGA PORTUGAL 2 MEU SUPER: TONDELA 2-0 PORTIMONENSE

Both of the Algarve’s professional clubs remain amongst the bottom three of their respective divisions following defeats last weekend.

Last Saturday afternoon, Farense began their home match against Gil Vicente on the front foot and could easily have been ahead at the break but for poor finishing from Marco Matias and Raul Silva. Instead, manager Tozé Marreco’s men found themselves trailing immediately after the restart as Lucas Áfrico turned a hopeful Félix Correia cross into his own net.

Farense were left unsuccessfully chasing an equaliser thereafter, not aided by some questionable decisions from referee Bruno Costa who failed to spot a Kazu handball in the Gil Vicente area before adjudging Tomané’s 87th-minute strike to have been off side by the narrowest of margins.

On Sunday afternoon, second division Portimonense were comprehensively outplayed by league leaders Tondela over a very one-sided opening half during which two Roberto goals, the first from the penalty spot, put the home side firmly in charge. Several substitutions stemmed the tide following the interval, but the Algarveans were never really in the game.

Portimonense have two home matches to look forward to next against Viseu on Saturday afternoon and Alverca on the morning of January 4, while Farense are away at Famalicão this coming Saturday and then welcome Guimarães on Sunday the 29th.
