Algarve football round-up: False start

LIGA PORTUGAL BETCLIC: FARENSE 1-2 MOREIRENSE

LIGA PORTUGAL 2: FELGUEIRAS 0-0 PORTIMONENSE

During last Sunday evening’s season-opening match with Moreirense, a Farense XI featuring six new signings always had problems dealing with their much better organised visitors and fell behind to a Maracas header as soon as the seventh minute.

Matters did not improve thereafter, Madson, Ruben Ismael and Alanzinho all coming close to doubling the lead. Moreirense then had Sidnei Tavares sent off for a 64th-minute second yellow card offence and Farense immediately equalised through substitute Bermejo.

Unfortunately for the Algarvians, Nlavo Asué latched on to a loose ball following a defensive mix-up soon after and scored the winner.

Portimonense also started their match on Monday with three debutants but had only keeper Vinicius to thank for the fact that the match was still scoreless by half time. Five substitutions later, nothing changed and the two sides settled for a disappointing share of the points.

This weekend, both Algarve clubs are in action on Saturday, Farense travelling to Rio Ave for a 3.30pm kick-off while Portimonense welcome União de Leiria at 8.30pm.
