Algarve football round-up: Looking up

LIGA PORTUGAL BETCLIC: CASA PIA 1-1 FARENSE

LIGA PORTUGAL 2 MEU SUPER: OLIVEIRENSE 0-2 PORTIMONENSE

Going into the two-week international and FA Cup fourth round break, both Algarve clubs managed to gain points away from home last weekend.

Early on Saturday afternoon, Ruan gave Portimonense the 25th-minute lead at bottom club Oliveirense before Chico Banza chipped home keeper Arthur in the second half for his sixth strike of the season to make sure of all three points.

Only the second win under new manager Ricardo Pessoa takes the Algarveans into 15th place in the league table and within striking distance of six clubs only two points immediately above them. Next up will be the catch-up game against high-flying Benfica B at the Municipal Stadium on Saturday, November 23 (11am kick-off) followed by another home encounter with Chaves the following Saturday.

Farense also played away later that afternoon at Casa Pia and got off to the perfect start when Elves Balde scored a goal-of-the-season contender with a 30-metre pile-driver from the centre circle.

Unfortunately, the remainder of the match failed to live up to its spectacular beginning, the two sides managing a poor total of four shots on target between them thereafter. One of those, a Cassiano penalty on the half-hour mark, pulled the home side level, and yet Farense could have come away with a victory if substitute Jaiminho had not missed an open goal in second half injury time.

The club from the Algarve’s capital are back in FA Cup fourth round action at Arouca on Saturday week (November 23) before welcoming fellow strugglers Estrela Amadora on Friday, November 29.
