Algarve football round-up: Looking up!

LIGA PORTUGAL 2 MEU SUPER: FC PORTO B 1-2 PORTIMONENSE

Portimonense celebrated their second successive win in Porto last Sunday lunchtime taking manager Ricardo Pessoa’s team into 13th place in the second division league table on 20 points.

A lively start saw André Oliveira put the hosts ahead after 10 minutes, Vinicius having kept out Cande’s initial effort. But the visitors from the Algarve equalised almost by return from an almost identical situation, keeper Gonçalo Ribeiro finding himself unable to hold on to a stinging Chico Banza shot which allowed Paulo Vitor to slot home the loose ball.

The match then lost some of its intensity until Porto began to press forward with intent following the interval. However, it was Portimonense who made the all-important breakthrough when the VAR-assisted referee deemed home defender João Teixeira to have illegally intercepted debutant Heitor’s goal-bound strike, Paulo Vitor subsequently doubling his personal tally from the penalty spot for the winner.

Portimonense are next in action at their Municipal Stadium on Saturday afternoon when mid-table Felgueiras are the visitors.

Farense, who confirmed their to date only transfer window signing in the shape of 25-year-old Guimarães central defender Tomás Ribeiro, only return to league action next Sunday at Moreirense, the break allowing them to concentrate on Tuesday night’s Portuguese FA Cup last 16 home tie against Benfica.
